Attorney-General reviewing sentence in vicious assault case

ATTORNEY-General Jarrod Bleijie is reviewing the jail sentence handed down to a Gold Coast man who severed his then girlfriend's tongue during a vicious assault.

Mohammed Tasleem Tahir was jailed last week in the Southport District Court for eight-and-a-half years for grievous bodily harm.

Tahir bashed the victim with an empty rum bottle, then slit the corners of her lips with a knife and severed her tongue.
He will be eligible for parole on September 12, 2013.

A spokesman for Mr Bleijie said the Attorney-General had asked for advice from the DPP on whether the sentence could be appealed on the grounds it was manifestly inadequate.

The spokesman said Mr Bleijie was concerned the sentence did not set an adequate deterrent and was not in line with community expectations.
