Atheltics to share limelight as one of top Olympic sports

ATHLETICS has lost its place as the sole category A Olympic sport, a decision that will cost the International Association of Athletics Federations millions of dollars in funding.

The IOC this week made a host category changes based on data from the London Games, including television audiences, internet page views, general popularity, ticket requests, press coverage and the number of national federations involved.

The biggest winners were swimming and gymnastics which were elevated alongside athletics as category A sports.

The IAAF expected to receive about $US47million from a total pool of almost $US520million from London, but that amount will shrink significantly in Rio.

The new rankings are:

Category A: athletics, gymnastics, swimming.

Category B: cycling, basketball, football (soccer), tennis and volleyball.

Category C: archery, badminton, boxing, judo, rowing, shooting, table tennis and weightlifting.

Category D: canoe/kayaking, equestrian, fencing, handball, field hockey, sailing, taekwondo, triathlon and wrestling.

Category E: modern pentathlon, golf and rugby.
