Ashwin cracks 250-wicket milestone in quickest time
CRICKET: Their Test series hasn't even begun yet but India has already got one over Australia.
Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has usurped Aussie great Dennis Lillee as the fastest man to take 250 Test wickets, reaching the milestone when he knocked over Mushfiqur Rahim during India's one-off Test against Bangladesh.
Currently playing his 45th Test, the 30-year-old has bettered Lillee's 1981 mark by three matches.
South Africa's Dale Steyn is the next quickest, having taken 49 Tests.
Ashwin also boasts the record for the equal most five-wicket hauls after 45 Tests, having collected 24. Remarkably, the man he is tied with, Sydney Barnes, only played 27 matches for England between 1901 and 1914.
It wasn't that long ago that Ashwin found himself out of India's Test XI.
The tweaker was benched for three of India's five games in England in 2014 and overlooked for unproven leg-spinner Karn Sharma in the Border-Gavaskar series opener in 2014-15.
Since then, he has become the game's most dangerous bowler, topping the wicket-taking charts in 2015 (62 at 17.20) and 2016 (72 at 23.90).
