DINERS continue to embrace modern Australian menus for the third year running, according to research into Aussies' dining habits nationwide.

Online booking platform Dimmi released its annual Dimmi Australian Dining Index last week.

Results showed restaurants serving a modern Australian menu took out the top spot of most popular cuisine for a third year running.

But it seems our tastebuds are on the move with Italian and steak restaurants coming in at a close second.

One of Australians' favourite meals, brunch, is also declining in popularity. Instead, the traditional afternoon tea has had a 16% spike in reservations from last year.

Aussies are also willing to spend more on dining. The average spend per person, per booking, is now $65, which is an increase of 1.14% from last year.

A new trend of singles dining has also emerged. Single diner bookings are up 27%, and New South Wales accounts for just under half (40.69%) of those bookings.

Victoria comes in second, followed by Queensland (14.1%).

Dimmi managing director Jared Chapman said many eateries were providing bar dining and communal tables for solo diners who still wanted social interaction.

"It's great to see Aussies getting out and enjoying the amazing food scene, whether they are travelling solo or aren't in the mood for a night of takeaway and Netflix," he said.

Mr Chapman also said the survey proved Australia was a nation of foodies.

"These insights provide the evidence that the restaurant industry is continuing to flourish and diversify," he said.
