ASH Walsh must feel like a man swimming against the tide.
Each time his goal appears within reach a wave of misfortune sweeps him further from it.
“It was a pretty disastrous weekend,” Walsh said of his Fujitsu V8 Supercar development series round four efforts at Queensland Raceway.
“In qualifying we ended up 10th, so that was quite good – 1.11.4 in my car is pretty quick, so I was happy with that.
“In race one I was up to seventh after avoiding two accidents. But I had knocked my mirror off.
“It was hanging on by a wire.
“So I was black flagged, had to pit and went back to last.”
Starting from last in race two last Sunday, Walsh was forced to make an extra pit stop after his car fogged up in the wet.
From there, he found his car responded well in the conditions and he worked his way up to seventh spot.
“I was one and a half seconds quicker than anyone else at that point,” he said. “Then I was black flagged because my rain light wasn't working.
“I wasn't a happy boy after that.
“As it was, I probably would have won the race.”
In drier conditions in race three, also last Sunday, Walsh again started from the back and had reached 10th spot when a competitor in front of him broke down, dumping oil on the track.
Walsh was too close behind to avoid it and his weekend was over.
“I slid off on the second last lap,” he said.
All he could do was wonder what might have been.
“Top seven in the dry was on the cards,” he said. “In the rain I could have won the race.
“The car responded well to the wet. I'm not sure why because I've never driven a V8 supercar in the wet before.”
Walsh remains frustrated by his inability to break through in his first season racing V8s, knowing how fickle the industry is when you're not winning.
“It would have been a big thing for my career,” he said. “It was disappointing two rounds in a row things like this happen.
“All I can do is keep pushing forward and worry about the things I can control.”
It was taking all his powers of positive thinking to do so in the immediate aftermath of the weekend, even if it served to confirm Walsh's ability to perform when given a decent chance.
“As a driver you've got to believe in your ability,” he said.
“The hard thing is being in the right mental position to perform well enough. When it's going well for you you've got to go well.”
Walsh's Miles Racing team has been granted a wildcard entry to the two endurance races on the V8 Supercar calendar, at Phillip Island from September 11-13 and Bathurst in October.
However Walsh is not getting too excited just yet.
“I'm not sure if we have the budget and gear to run the enduros.”
