Boxing class beats bullying

WHEN you meet Anne-Marie Kelly it is hard to imagine that she was once anything but a fit athlete.

But behind her confident and tough exterior, the 15-year-old boxer has an extraordinary secret.

She was once an overweight 12-year-old who was the target of schoolyard bullies.

Anne-Marie weighed in at 85 kilograms and was sick of being picked on.

So, with the support of her mum, Anne-Marie decided to get fit and shed some kilos.

“I started boxing to lose the weight and get into the ring,” she said.

“Mum wanted me to keep out of trouble and I needed to lose weight because I was getting a hard time.

“I have always been interested in boxing.”

With her interest in the sport, it was only natural that she would don some gloves and team up with Police Citizen Youth Club trainer Neil Palmblad.

She now trains up to five days a week.

“With boxing, you stay on your feet all the time,” she said.

“You keep hitting and keep moving.

“It is a good cardio workout.

“It only took me nine months to lose that much weight.

“I feel so much better.

“I don’t get given a hard time anymore.”

Last month, Anne-Marie won the Queensland Novice title in her weight division.

She hopes to continue her success at the Darling Downs titles being held at the PCYC gym tomorrow night.

“I was pretty happy (to win), but I think I can do better,” she said.

It only took me nine months to lose that much weight.
