OUR SAY: Americans must give up guns

THE tragedy of the Orlando shooting massacre will take some time to hit home here in Australia.

More than 50 people are dead.

Now come the questions.

How could this have happened?

Sadly, the question is easily answered.

Americans refuse to vote for real gun control.

There is no way this man could have killed 50 people if he did not have access to a semi-automatic rifle.

The rifle, an AR-15, has been used in several high-casualty mass shootings in the US in recent years.

There have been more than 30 mass shootings in America since President Obama took office in 2009.

Yet Obama has spoken out for gun control more than any president in recent memory.

But his calls go unheeded.

Americans refuse to give up their guns.

And while they continue to do so, these killings will continue.
