Alleged arsonist granted bail but banned from town
A BRISBANE justice banned an Oakey man from going within 30km of the town, near Toowoomba, when he released him on bail for lighting a fire.
The bail hearing for Scott Edward Berrell in Brisbane Supreme Court was brief as Justice David Boddice granted bail with strict conditions, including no contact with his father Robert Berrell.
Justice Boddice also ordered that Berrell undergo mental health assessment because he was concerned about his mental state.
Berrell, 40, must report to police three times a week and must live at an OzCare facility in South Brisbane.
He is charged with endangering a property with fire, wilful damage, failing to comply with reporting requirements and other driving offences.
Emergency services were called to a home in Cunliffe St, Oakey, last month after Berrell allegedly set fire to it.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread throughout the home.
