WHILE short-term projects in the Bowen Basin have slowed, longer-term development is steaming ahead.
Yesterday the first sod was turned for construction of the Pacific National Coal Nebo Train Maintenance Facility's second phase.
This phase of the project has been fast tracked and is about 18 months ahead of schedule.
Pacific National Coal director David Irwin said the project had been ramped up because of demand from their customers.
"This new stage of construction is to cater for BMA's four new trains," he said.
"We have 12 of our own trains, which pass through the station regularly.
"It works like a service station, similar to where cars go to refuel."
The new expansion will cost $20 million and will add about four new lanes to the $180 million facility.
"The BMA trains will also have the opportunity to have scheduled maintenance works conducted in our workshop (at the facility)," he said.
A BMA spokeswoman said the project would help with the export of coal from some of their bigger mines.
"BMA is planning to own and operate coal trains to transport export coal from its new Daunia and Caval Ridge mines to the Hay Point Coal Terminal when the terminal expansion is operational in 2014," the spokeswoman said yesterday.
"The Queensland Government has approved BMA's application for accreditation as a rail infrastructure manager and rolling stock operator.
"BMA has executed a maintenance contract with Pacific National to maintain the BMA train sets at the Pacific National facility at Nebo following a competitive tendering process," she said.
