Virgin flight landed with a single engine

THE Virgin Airlines Gladstone flight to Brisbane forced to make an emergency landing in Gladstone on Monday night landed with a single engine.

The pilot of flight VA1720 noticed an oil pressure problem on the port engine and made the decision to shut down one engine and fly back to Gladstone airport.

Virgin Australia's public affairs specialist Libby Armstrong said the incident was standard operating procedure and nothing to be concerned about.

"The ATR with 30 passengers on board landed safely at 21.15 local time and was met by emergency services as a standard precautionary measure," she said.

"Despite the aircraft's engineering incident it was able to taxi in to the gate on its own.

"Virgin Australia sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused," she said.

All passengers from the flight were accommodated in Gladstone overnight and were rescheduled to fly out as a matter of priority first thing yesterday morning.

Gladstone airport ground staff member Col Bray was on duty at the time of the incident and said everything was "as okay as it could be", considering the circumstances.

"The pilots did a great job, as though it was an everyday event," he said.

"They must have been well-drilled and trained pilots."

It was the second plane in one day to have difficulty in the wet and wild conditions on Monday.

Another Virgin aircraft got into trouble that morning, getting caught in crosswinds and having to perform a "go around" to land safely.

The aircraft involved in Monday night's incident was at the airport yesterday, with Virgin engineers investigating and working to fix the problem to ensure the plane returned to the sky as quickly as possible.
