Safety first as CQ stormchasers capture weather drama

STORMY weather may be an excuse for many to stay indoors, but it doesn't deter some from going out and taking some extraordinary pictures.

While Mackay doesn't offer the same opportunities for storm pictures as surrounding areas, keen storm chasers are hitting the region's roads in pursuit of weather hot spots.

Storm chasers in the Mackay region have travelled as far as Clermont, Nebo, Dysart, Moranbah and past St Lawrence to shoot awe-inspiring photos.

Amy Taylor contributed pictures to The Daily Mercury and shared some of her favourite places to chase storms.

"It's tricky having to try and situate yourself in the best place to catch the storm," she said. "I like Glenden Rd and Golden Mile Rd in Dysart, there are not a lot of trees and good visibility all around.

"Anywhere like Sarina hasn't really got much visibility, so you have to go out past St Lawrence to get the visibility you need."

Ms Taylor said she was passionate about storm chasing and had been involved in the activity for quite some time.

"I have been doing this since I was 28, so for quite a long time," she said.

"I first got into it when I got stuck in a storm as a delivery driver when I was young. Adrenaline is what got me going and I had to get into it, it really sparked my interest."

Ms Taylor also advised those interested in participating in the activity to put safety first and not risk lives.

"You need to be safe and not get yourself into dangerous situations to get that shot," she said.

"It's not worth putting your life in danger."
