Adam Scott disappoints in Australian Masters opening round

AUSTRALIAN Masters organisers will be on edge today with defending champion and major weekend drawcard Adam Scott needing to fight back after shooting a disappointing opening-round 73 in tough conditions at Metropolitan Golf Club.

Chasing a record third successive Masters, the 34-year-old Queenslander, who broke Australia's US Masters curse last year, rescued what could have been a disastrous first round with a late eagle, but still finished six shots behind the leading group.

That quartet is made up of Queenslanders Steven Bowditch and Michael Wright and Victorians Stephen Allan and Todd Sinnott, who all shot five-under.

The concern for organisers is that Scott will face the worst conditions playing in the afternoon.

Despite being tied for 51st, Scott played down his predicament.

"I played pretty good overall, but didn't take any of my chances," the world No.2 said.

"I'm behind the eight ball, but that's nothing a good round today can't fix."
