Adam Giles replaces Terry Mills as NT Chief Minister

NORTHERN Territorians will wake up to a new Chief Minister today, after former Local Government Minister Adam Giles rolled long-term Country Liberal Party leader Terry Mills for the top job.

Unconfirmed reports of the Territory's leadership spill came first from ABC Alice Springs via Twitter, before confirmation came later on Wednesday.

Pressure had been building on Mr Mills in recent weeks, after a group of relatively new indigenous MPs threatened to leave the party and stand as independents.

It is understood Mr Giles put his hand up for the job last week, but a spill was narrowly avoided.

The change in conservative party leadership in the NT comes just days after form Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu was also rolled by his own party, which installed Denis Napthine as that state's new Premier.
