Cai Guo-Qiang art gives state economy a $14.51 million boost

QUEENSLAND'S economy received a $14.51 million boost thanks to the blockbuster Cai Guo-Qiang: Falling Back to Earth exhibition.

The unique display, on show recently at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, attracted more than 229,000 visitors - the second largest exhibition attendance in the gallery's history.

Arts Minister Ian Walker, talking exclusively to APN Newsdesk, said Falling Back to Earth had been a runaway success especially with regional art lovers.

"Falling Back to Earth is an example of what can be achieved if a show captures Queenslanders' imagination," he said.

"We know about 42% of those who attended did not live in Brisbane.

"Families in regional Queensland also got a taste of the exhibition with a program of interactive activities that toured to more than 60 regional Queensland galleries and community venues."

Gallery of Modern Art director Chris Saines said the response to Cai Guo-Qiang: Falling Back to Earth exhibition had been overwhelming.

"We know Cai Guo-Qiang is one of the most important artists working today," he said.

"The audience's incredible response has made Falling Back to Earth one of the most successful exhibitions to date alongside those of work by iconic 20th century artists Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso."
