Accused terrorist group supporter denied bail

LATEST:  ONE of the men accused of supporting al-Qaeda linked Syrian terrorists Jabhat al-Nusra has been denied bail.

Omar Succarieh, 31, applied in the Brisbane Supreme Court for bail today.

He is facing charges of accused of intentionally collecting or making money available for Jabhat al-Nusra, also known as the al-Nusra Front and al-Qaeda in Syria, for more than a year, and assisting co-accused Agim Kruezi obtaining funds to fight overseas, and possessing steroids.

Justice Peter Jackson was scathing in his assessment of a Federal officer's affidavit, however, stating it "leaves a lot to be desired."

The court heard Mr Succarieh needed to prove exceptional circumstances to be granted bail, which he failed to do.

He was remanded in custody.

Accused 'sent thousands to terrorist group'

ONE of the men accused of supporting a Syrian terrorist group linked with al-Qaeda sent more than $27,000 to his brother.

The Brisbane Supreme Court heard police conducted covert operations on Omar Succarieh.

Succarieh, 31, has been accused of intentionally collecting or making money available for Jabhat al-Nusra, also known as the al-Nusra Front and al-Qaeda in Syria, for more than a year, and assisting co-accused Agim Kruezi obtaining funds to fight overseas, and possessing steroids.

Police allege from August 10m last year Succarieh was involved in collecting money for the terrorist group, and from February 29 to March 9 this year assisted Kruezi alleged preparations to fight overseas.

Defence lawyer Peter Callaghan told the court the evidence against Succarieh was weak, the charges "duplicitous" and said there was no evidence Succarieh knew Jabhat al-Nusra was a terrorist organisation.

Succarieh's application for bail was adjourned until 2.30pm.
