Accused Ipswich robber pleads guilty to fraud, not violence

A TRANSGENDER person who is on trial for robbing an elderly woman and using her credit card to rack up significant charges claims he was only responsible for some of the offences.

Derek Sinden, 44, who likes to be referred to as Shanika Sinden, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in the Brisbane District Court to armed robbery with violence, stealing and three fraud-related offences.

However, Sinden pleaded guilty to seven other fraud offences.

Crown Prosecutor Jennifer O'Brien said Sinden, who is from Ipswich, along with a co-accused, followed an 84-year-old woman home after she had spent the morning shopping before robbing her outside her north Brisbane home.

She said Sinden stole the woman's handbag and purse before using her credit card over the next three hours at various stores in the Brisbane central business district.

The woman sustained a fractured eye socket, jaw, ribs and wrist in the January 12 attack.

The trial before Judge Sarah Bradley continues.
