Accused Fraser Coast drug trafficker granted bail

A FRASER COAST man who has been accused of trafficking meth has been granted bail on the condition he undergo rehabilitation at a live-in facility.

Justan Anthony Jukes, 24, applied for bail at Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday.

He faces charges including trafficking meth, entering a dwelling and assault occasioning bodily harm while armed with a baseball bat.

The court heard that evidence the Crown had against Mr Jukes for the drug charge included seven months of surveillance where police allegedly intercepted phone calls and text messages.

Supreme Court Justice Jean Dalton said because Mr Jukes had been charged with an offence of being armed he had to prove why he should be released on bail.

She said Mr Jukes had submitted that his alleged offences related to his addiction to marijuana and meth and that he had offered to undergo a 12-month rehabilitation course where he would live at a facility.

The court heard Mr Jukes preferred to undergo rehabilitation at a facility in Hervey Bay but one of his co-accused was currently living there.

"The other more general concern is that if he were part of a widespread drug trafficking network in Hervey Bay I think it would be quite difficult for him to live in that community in the rehabilitation centre," Justice Dalton said.

She granted him bail with several conditions, including that he undergo rehabilitation at a facility in Logan, south of Brisbane.
