Accused drug trafficker sacks lawyers morning of trial

THE trial for three men charged over one of Australia's largest drug busts has been postponed after one of the men sacked their lawyers the morning it was to begin.

Simon Charles Golding, Terrance Elfar and Holger Sander are accused of importing 496kg of cocaine found on a yacht at Redcliffe, south of the Sunshine Coast.

Mr Elfar fired the Legal Aid-funded lawyers set to defend him in the Brisbane Supreme Court during the trial starting Wednesday.

He told Justice Roslyn Atkinson he had "grave concerns" about the lawyers.

He now has only days to find legal representatives after Justice Atkinson adjourned the trial until Monday.

She described the lawyers Mr Elfar fired as "competent" and "dogged".

Justice Atkinson released the New South Welshman on bail, despite Crown prosecutor Glen Rice's argument he was a flight risk, to find legal representation.

But she warned him he would have to represent himself if he found no-one.

Justice Atkinson said she understood it might cause problems if Mr Elfar had to represent himself, but they would "have to be coped with".
