Accused denies robbing Westpac Bank at Stockland Rockhampton

"I DIDN'T do this."

The desperation in John Robert Cole's voice was apparent as he became increasingly frustrated trying to tell a Rockhampton magistrate that he didn't rob a Westpac Bank branch.

The 33-year-old was sitting in the dock of the Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday facing an armed robbery charge.

Cole was arrested at Stockland late Monday afternoon after he allegedly entered Westpac Bank at Stockland Rockhampton last Thursday and told a teller that he had a gun.

He allegedly threatened the teller before fleeing the scene with cash.

It was been reported that Cole was bitten by a german shepherd in a backyard as he ran from the scene, but that's not the case according to Cole.

Denying any involvement in the robbery, an emotional Cole was adamant on proving his innocence.

Within the first few minutes of his short court appearance, Cole asked to see a doctor to prove that he did not have bite wounds caused by a dog.

"I want to prove these injuries aren't from a dog bite," Cole said, as he stood up in the dock.

"I wasn't bitten by a dog. I didn't do this."

Cole, from Yeppoon, became agitated and his voice began to rise as he told the magistrate that he had lost his son because of the ordeal. "This is important to my life and freedom," Cole said. "I've lost my son over this."

As Cole became more agitated in the dock, Magistrate Michael O'Driscoll ordered him to be taken back to the watchhouse.

Cole was remanded in custody and the matter was adjourned to March 11.
