Teenager jailed for brutal killing of guinea pig

A TOOWOOMBA teenager who killed a guinea pig by throwing it hard into a concrete pavement has been handed a jail sentence.

Kyle Robert Rice, 19, said he had bought two guinea pigs which he had planned to kill, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

He was captured on video throwing one guinea pig into the footpath on Nimrod Crt about 1.30pm, August 18, last year, before throwing the dead pet into a nearby yard, police prosecutor Senior Constable Tim Hutton said

Rice pleaded guilty to killing the animal as well as to stealing a mobile phone and selling it on Gum Tree; committing a public nuisance and struggling with police arresting him on Taylor St, November 8, last year; and to three other charges.

His solicitor David Burns said his client's offending started after he tragically lost his mother and younger brother who were drowned in Toowoomba in the January 2011 floods but he was aware he couldn't keep using that as an excuse or nothing would change.

Magistrate Damian Carroll sentenced Rice to three months jail, but ordered he be released on immediate parole and placed him on two years probation. He was also fined $300 and ordered to make $800 restitution.
