White-hot Flametree: Western Australia and its top wines
WESTERN Australia does many things well, especially sunsets over beaches and top-quality wines. Margaret River is the heartland of West Australian wine, and just near the seaside town of Dunsborough is Flametree Wines. A relative newcomer, the winery was established in 2007 and won the Jimmy Watson trophy at Royal Melbourne Wine Show with its first ever red. Cliff Royle crafts the wines after spending 12 years at Voyager Estate.
Flametree Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon
2014: Lemon juice, green tropical fruit and white nectarine. Passionfruit seeds and sauvignon blanc "ashtray" aromas. The two grapes work in harmony here, with the semillon acting like a knife carving through the tropical sav blanc. Not too tart or green, finishes with a hint of seaside sea spray, which is exactly where you should be drinking this.
2014: A refined nose with nothing out of place. Just ripe peaches, fresh figs and citrus rind. The wine was French oak matured (but not for too long) to give a little spiced toast character to the nose and the palate. Refined flavour, too, pristine juicy citrus flavours that are neatly tucked into line with fresh vibrancy. This will convert any staunch non-chardonnay drinker.
Flametree SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay
2014: Part of their Sub Regional Series, from the area of Wallcliffe, located in the middle of Margaret River. Exquisite and complex. Nutty popcorn, citrus pith, minerally quartz, gun smoke and figs. Elegance with refined, juicy white grapefruit citrus fruit and an almost ethereal texture. Finishes with a briny tang. Among the best chardonnays in Australia.
