Warren Ryan resigns over on-air racial slur

RUGBY league commentator Warren Ryan has resigned from the ABC and is refusing to apologise for a comment which sparked an on-air racism investigation.

The ABC suspended the former coach and player over a remark made during a game between the Sydney Roosters and Canterbury Bulldogs.

Ryan told Fairfax on Sunday that as the ABC had suspended him "pending" an investigation, he had resigned to "save them the trouble of conducting it".

He maintained no offence was intended - that he was simply comparing an on-field stoush to a scene over civil war film Gone with the Wind and any form of apology would be "insincere".
