Thousands protest Israel's missile strikes against homes

THOUSANDS of protesters took to the streets in Sydney, Melbourne, France, United States and United Kingdom at the weekend condemning Israel's continued missile strikes against towns and communities in Gaza.

More than 1030 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in the fighting since July 8 when Israel launched its offensive, aimed at ending rocket fire by Islamist militants out of Gaza.

Thirty-nine Israelis have died since the conflict started.

Residents across Gaza used a 12-hour humanitarian truce on Sunday to return to their homes, gather essential supplies and search for those trapped in the rubble.

A Palestinian health official told the BBC at least 85 bodies had been pulled from the rubble during the truce.

It is understood one major objection to a ceasefire now is that it will not allow enough time for Israel to complete military operations against the cross-border tunnels that Hamas has dug for infiltrating Israel.

Removing the threat from tunnels was the stated reason for Israel launching its ground offensive in Gaza 10 days ago, following an aerial campaign whose stated goal was to halt rocket fire from Gaza against Israel.

International talks on a longer truce between the two waring parties resumed in Paris.
