Student debt clarification still a dire prospect for youth

THE authors of an academic report on student debt quoted in a story printed by APN yesterday have clarified they got some projections wrong.

While the story, titled "Uni students face a lifetime of debt" was correct, one of two analyses quoted, from the National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education, had an error.

It overstated the time to pay back university debt under new government debt arrangements by several years, but still confirmed the time taken to pay back such debt could be up to 22 years.

"These numbers are still somewhat concerning, but not quite as significant as we initially calculated," a statement from The Conversation website, which published the original data, said.
