Psychiatrist faces the sack after exploiting young woman

A SENIOR Queensland Health psychiatrist faces the sack after his lewd past came back to haunt him.

Dr Manilall Maharajh, who moved to Australia from New Zealand in 2008, has been practising at both Caboolture and Redcliffe hospitals for more than two years.

Last month, the New Zealand Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal found that Dr Maharajh had exploited the anxieties of a young woman, a virgin, for his own sexual gratification.

He attempted to pay the woman $35,000 to withdraw her complaint as well as accusing her of blackmail by making up the sex claims.

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency knew about claims made against Dr Maharajh and put restrictions in place that required him to have a chaperone present at all times when treating women.

It was only after New Zealand authorities found him unfit to practice psychiatry and struck him off their register that Queensland Health moved to suspend Dr Maharajh last week.

It is understood no complaints have made been against Dr Maharajh during his time at either Caboolture or Redcliffe hospitals.
