Palmer swipes Greens for supporting hit to miners' fuel bill

CLIVE Palmer has hit out at The Greens' support for the Abbott government's plan to increase fuel excise twice a year, unveiled in the budget a fortnight ago.

While The Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne has ruled out supporting most of the government's budget agenda, the fuel excise increases is a stand alone measure the minor party backs.

But even it will come up against opposition in the Senate, with both Labor and the Palmer United Party promising to block it.

Mr Palmer said the excise increase would have a "devastating effect" on all motorists, but "particularly those in Queensland and West Australia who suffer the tyranny of greater distances".

"Everybody who drives a car, even the Greens, should understand that fuel is a huge part of the family budget each week, getting to work and running the kids to school and sport," he said.

"Why should Australians carry the burden of increased fuel charges which will only keep going up and up - it is a burden that will hit everybody in this country."

While Sen Milne has previously backed the excise rises, on Friday she ruled out supporting much of the rest of the government's agenda.

As the government began officially wooing numerous Senators this week to get budget measures past the Senate, she described the budget as "written for the big end of town".

"It's no good promising independent senators all sorts of things in backrooms - the government needs to come out and tell the public what they are doing," she said.
