Senator Lambie grills Senator Abetz on foreign aid

THE ABBOTT Government's top Senator has faced heated questioning over why $5 billion in foreign aid should be sent overseas, while "sick, needy pensioners" in Tasmania are left behind.

Senator Eric Abetz faced the passionate questioning of Palmer United Party Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie in Question Time on Tuesday.

The outspoken junior senator asked how he could justify "taxpayers' money being sent to other countries, while sick, needy, pensioners, parents, and the unemployed are harmed by this government's budget".

Her question was welcomed with relish from the Opposition benches, with Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Penny Wong even calling for her to be allowed to finish the question over-time.

But Senator Abetz brushed it aside, saying the budget was set out to "bring about social dividends we believe will flow" from bigger savings.
