Man punches partner's ex in face

KANE Arthur Hawthorn "saw red" and couldn't control his anger when he witnessed his partner kissing her ex-boyfriend in a Hervey Bay carpark.

So he rushed over to the car where the two were canoodling inside, and began repeatedly punching the man's face through an open window.

As the driver attempted to drive away, Hawthorn also punched the car's windscreen.

Police charged Hawthorn with assault occasioning bodily harm and wilful damage over the March 10 incident.

He pleaded guilty to the crimes in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court.

The court heard that Hawthorn had gone to the carpark at the corner of Boat Harbour Dr and Main St, near the Night Owl convenience store, to pick up his girlfriend.

That's when he saw her kissing the other man and the trouble unfurled.

The prosecution said Hawthorn punched his victim six times in the head before shattering the windscreen with his fist.

Duty lawyer Craig Ryan told the court Hawthorn was on medication for his anger issues and was also completing anger management courses.

"He's absolutely lost his temper and saw red," Mr Ryan said.

"He's lashed out."

Mr Ryan said Hawthorn had simply "misconstrued" the situation and continued to be in relationship with his partner, who was now expecting a child.

Hawthorn was ordered to pay $500 compensation to his victim for pain and suffering and repairs to the car windscreen.

"Obviously there are bad health problems here, Mr Hawthorn," Magistrate Graeme Tatnell said.

"Alcohol and anger don't mix.

"And alcohol, drugs and anger are like a time bomb waiting to go off."

Hawthorn was convicted and fined $750, along with the $500 compensation.
