Julie Bishop's C20 summit speech upstaged by protest

PROTESTERS marred Foreign Minister Julie Bishop's opening address at a key community summit leading up to the G20 in Melbourne on Friday.

Ms Bishop was first major speaker at the C20 summit, which aims to put community concerns about issues including climate change on the G20 agenda.

But after a relatively cordial speech, Ms Bishop was targeted by a protester as she left the University of Melbourne.

The man was arrested at the scene to chants from fellow protestors asking for police to leave him alone, during a public protest about jobs and the federal budget.

The summit will continue tomorrow with anti-corruption experts, community sector representatives and others hoping to influence the international agenda of the G20 later this year.
