Court date set for man accused of torturing baby to death

A QUEENSLAND man who is accused of allegedly torturing and murdering a baby has had his matter heard briefly in court.

Michael John Humphreys, 28, was charged earlier this year with murder, torture, failing to provide the necessities of life and assault occasioning bodily harm over the death of a baby girl in the small town of Gunalda, near Gympie, in September 2012.

His arrest came on the back of an exhaustive 18 month police investigation into the one-month-old child's death.

It is understood the baby girl died of blunt force trauma injuries

Humphreys, who was not present in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday, will have his matter heard before the same court again on September 15.
