THE company promising to base a $5 billion military contract in regional Queensland will set up an $80 million fund for universities to develop advanced technology.

QUT will be one of four universities around the country to share in the fund.

Rheinmetall Defence Australia is one of two companies bidding for the $5 billion Land 400 phase two contract to build 225 armoured reconnaissance vehicles for the Australian Defence Force - and has promised to base its operations in Queensland.

Managing director Gary Stewart said the fund would be set up if it won the lucrative defence deal.
