50% of employees say workplace isn't good for mental health

LIMITED mental health policies, inflexible working hours and employees who look and feel as though they are overworked.

Sound familiar?

These are some traits of a mentally unhealthy workplaces, and sadly nearly 50% of people believe their place of work isn't the best for their mental state.

That was just one of the worrying statistics found in research released by Beyondblue.

To make it even worse, a region like Mackay where workers may have concerns about job security can lead to more mental health issues.

Beyondblue media adviser Reid Sexton said he wasn't surprised by the figures, as he believes there are too many mentally unhealthy workplaces.

"They can come in all shapes and sizes," he said.

"Generally we find businesses where there are limited mental health policies, there is a higher rate of employees suffering anxiety and depression," he said.

Stress stemming from a workplace was not only terrible for the employees; it also affected the business owner's bottom line.

"A study by PwC revealed on average (that for) every $1 invested in effective workplace mental health strategies, a business received $2.30," Mr Sexton said.

"One in five has taken time off work in the past year because they've felt mentally unwell."

Creating a mentally healthy workplace could be as simple as having a private conversation with someone you think might be struggling, or putting up posters pointing people to help.

"I would recommend for people to take the data from Beyondblue and show someone they trust at work," he said.
