THE Mackay Ring Road is just one of the dozens of major projects in the works across the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions this financial year.
Here is the list of the top 42 to get excited about:
1. Mackay Ring Road (Stage 1) - touted as the biggest government funded infrastructure project in Mackay's history
Stage one of the project is 11.3km of new road north of the city to divert heavy vehicles from the city centre. There is $497.8m total spend to construct the new two-lane Mackay Ring Road, due for completion in July 2020. The ring road is being funded by the State and Federal governments.
2. Whitsunday Airport upgrade
About $15 million has been set aside to help deliver the $40 million Whitsunday Airport upgrade, including remediation of the existing runway and upgrade of the domestic terminal.
3. Magpies 10-year Master Plan
Magpies Sporting Club is investing heavily in the new NPL team Magpies Crusaders United with the launch of a $10 million master plan to create five new sporting fields, one with lighting and associated infrastructure, including a new clubhouse.
4. Mackay Netball Courts
Work will begin later this year on the Mackay Netball courts upgrade. The club has had an explosion in membership numbers and the new plan is to double the number of courts available to 16. The upgrade will also put the club in contention to hold State and National competitions.
5. Mackay Sport Precinct
The proposed $72 million Mackay Regional Sports Precinct, of which stages 1A and 1B ($20m worth) are now under development at the CQUniversity Mackay campus in Ooralea, is supported by the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday Regional councils together with local businesses and organisations.
6. Ozcare Aged Care home
Aged care is one of the big movers in the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac regions. One of the biggest aged care providers in the country is moving into Mackay for the first time. Ozcare has been approved for the development of a 120-bed aged care facility in West Mackay. The development will cost about $30 million and create at least 165 jobs during construction.
7. Opening of the Galilee Basin
The approval of Adani's Carmichael mine in the Galilee Basin is so much more than just the one $16.5 billion project. It could open the basin to at least five other major mining projects in the region. The mine approval gives the green light for the rail project to the port at Bowen.
8. Bowen Basin is back
Small players have started purchasing mining lease and reopening mines, such as the Blair Athol mine in the Bowen Basin. QCoal has also started building its Byerwen Coal Project about 20km from Glenden. This project is expected to produce about 10 million tonnes of hard coking coal per year.
9. Port upgrade
The increase in mining services and commodities is expended to make the port busier. The port has received money for fender upgrades at two of its wharfs. The project is expected to cost about $9.5million and is due for completion by December 2018.
10. Eton Range Realignment upgrade
While most of the port activity in the region is expected to come from rail, there is also going to be an increase of heavy haulage so upgrades have been funded for major road networks, such as the Eton Range Realignment Project that is costing about $189m and improving the link between Mackay and the Bowen Basin. The project is expected to cost up to June 2019.
11. Vines Creek Bridge upgrade
One of the vital links between the Port of Mackay and the city is the Vines Creek Bridges. The state government has spent $28m on improving the link with a replacement of the two bridges. The project is expected to create an additional 42 jobs. The new upgrade includes walking and cycling access across the creek.
12. Mackay Wharf 4 and 5 Fender upgrade
$7 million out of a $9.5m total spend to upgrade fenders at Wharf 4 and 5 to support trade growth, due for completion in December 2018.
13. Salisbury Plains Industrial Precinct
North of Mackay at Abbot Point is a $6.8m spend to help establish significant industrial developments and provide for the establishment of essential services and infrastructure corridors.
14. Bowen Hospital essential services upgrade
There is $5.4m being spent to undertake essential services upgrades including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, medical gas and fire protection services at Bowen Hospital.
15. Mackay Fire Station upgrade
It's not just an upgrade the Mackay Fire and Emergency Services is getting a completely new building. The $7.5m project is to create a state-of-the-art facility with work moving ahead at a feverish pace.
16. Bowen Police Station and watchhouse replacement
About $8 million is being spent to replace and upgrade the Bowen Police Station and watchhouse.
17. Bruce Highway upgrade (Sandy Gully Bridge)
There is $57.5 million being spent to replace the existing Sandy Gully Bridge to improve flood immunity, due for completion in May 2018.
18. Great Barrier Reef Marine Park moorings - Whitsunday Marine Area
There is $700,000 being spent to install new moorings offshore within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park - Whitsunday Marine Area.
19. Southern Whitehaven lookout trail
About $900,000 being spent to build a new lookout point at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach which includes a new walking track and orientation signs.
20. Whitsunday Sportspark upgrade
About $1.5 million is being spent to realign the existing sports field and develop an additional rectangular field and associated infrastructure at Airlie Beach.
21. Proserpine auxiliary fire and rescue station relocation and upgrade
About $3.2 million total spend to relocate and upgrade the Proserpine auxiliary fire and rescue station.
22. Collinsville Pipeline refurbishment and enhancement
About $472,000 in 2017-18 is being spent to repair, maintain, renew and enhance existing water infrastructure assets and water supply schemes for the Collinsville Pipeline.
23. Bowen Broken water supply refurbishment and enhancement
$402,000 in 2017-18 to repair, maintain, renew and enhance existing water infrastructure assets for Bowen Broken water supply.
24. Eimeo Road State School new classrooms
$5.9m out of a $6.6m total to commence construction of additional classrooms.
25. Mackay Northern Beaches State High School (Stage 3)
$1.1 million out of a $6.7 million total spend to commence Stage 3 works.
26. Mackay North State High School air conditioning replacement
$2.6 million out of a $3.1 million total spend to replace the air conditioning.
27. Mackay-Slade Point Road bridges replacement (Vines Creek)
$6.8 million out of a $28 million total spend to replace two bridges on the Mackay-Slade Point Road at Vines Creek, due for completion in December 2018. Part of the Accelerated Works Program.
28. Adult Step Up Step Down Facility - Mackay
$3.5 million out of a $4 million total spend to construct a new Adult Step Up Step Down Facility in Mackay providing the support to transition between acute and community services for people with mental illness. Part of the Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program.
29. Mackay Tennyson Street Substation upgrade
$1.4 million to upgrade the Mackay Tennyson Street Substation.
30. Mackay Neighbourhood Centre renewal
$1.1m out of a $1.2 million total spend to undertake a major upgrade of the existing Mackay Neighbourhood Centre to improve connectivity between buildings, increase functionality and efficiency, and address overcrowding.
31. Mackay Substation replacement
About $24.5m to be spent to replace aged primary plant and secondary systems to ensure continued reliability of supply to the surrounding area.
32. Mackay West State School classroom refurbishments
$688,000 in 2017-18 out of a $860,000 total spend to refurbish classrooms.
33. Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens operations centre and nursery (Stage 1)
$321,857 out of a $745,510 total spend to construct a purpose-built operations centre and nursery to improve operations and provide social and educational activities.
34. Dundula State School refurbishments
$516,000 out of a $860,000 spend to refurbish admin block and staff room.
35. Eton irrigation and water supply refurbishment and enhancement
$991,000 to repair, maintain, renew and enhance existing water infrastructure assets and water supply schemes.
36. Homebush State School new classrooms
$252,000 out of a $456,000 total spend to construct additional classrooms.
37. Sarina Hospital redevelopment
$1 million in 2017-18 out of a $16.5 million total spend to redevelop the hospital, staff accommodation and carpark at Sarina to support the provision of quality and safe services. Part of the Rural and Regional Infrastructure Package.
38. Peak Downs Hwy timber bridge replacements (Nebo to Mackay)
$10.2m out of a $70m total spend to replace timber bridges and approaches at various locations on the Peak Downs Highway between Nebo and Mackay, due for completion in January 2018. Delivered in partnership with the Australian Government.
39. Pioneer water supply refurbishment and enhancement
$462,000 to repair, maintain, renew and enhance existing water infrastructure assets for Pioneer water supply.
40. Moranbah Youth and Community Centre
About $3.2m to be spent to construct the community centre.
41. Clermont Montcler Monash Lodge
There is about $2 million to relocate the 16 bed Monash Lodge Aged Care facility to the Clermont Hospital.
42. Collinsville to Proserpine transmission line refit
About $29.8m total spend to aged assets on the Collinsville-Proserpine transmission line and avoid or delay the need to build new infrastructure.
