300,000 fans: Videos make cake baker go viral

KARLEE Prior is no ordinary cake baker, and her creations have gained her hundreds of thousands of fans.

Ms Prior, who grew up in Toowoomba but moved to Brisbane after leaving school, owns and operates Karlee's Kupcakes.

She bakes and decorates cakes for weddings, engagements, baby showers or any special occasion.

She has more than 300,000 followers on Instagram and she largely credits her following to the time-lapse videos she shares of her decorating cakes.

"I put the videos down to my success on social media. People love watching videos online these days," she said.

"Some have gone really viral, which is crazy.

"Sharing the clips is part of the experience now for my clients. It's exciting picking up your cake and it's rare to be able to see how someone has assembled and decorated it."

"I started watching YouTube clips online and buying bits and pieces in 2011, but I have to give credit to my home economics teacher who helped steer me in this direction," she said.

Ms Prior started wholesaling to Coco Bliss in Brisbane in 2013 and took her business full time at the end of 2014.

She now supplies her goods to 10 cafes around Brisbane and also bakes anywhere from five to 12 cakes or cupcake orders each week.
