ON THE BALL: Ben Reuter is looking to provide strong leadership as captain of the resurrected under-20 Toowoomba Clydesdales team.
Lockyer Valley football prodigy Ben Reuter has his eyes set firmly on success for 2012 as he prepares to captain the resurrected under-20s Toowoomba Clydesdales team.
As a sign of things to come, the former Gatton Hawks star took to the field over the weekend to head a dominant 18-6 performance in a trial match against the Ipswich Jets.
Despite rain ending play only halfway through the match, Reuter slipped comfortably into his new role with the club and said he was happy with the team's preparations heading into their inaugural FOGS Colts Challenge season opener against the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles in March.
"There were a lot of positives from the pre-season match," he said.
"The team performed well wrestling and slowing down the play of ball.
"If the year keeps going well we're a really good shot."
Building on years of experience between numerous clubs throughout the region, including a stint training in Red Hill with the Brisbane Broncos under-20s side, Reuter said he was confident he could stand strong in his role as captain and would lead by example.
"I'm not much of a talker on the field so I'll have to lead by example," he said.
"Whenever it gets tough out there I'll have to stand up."
Along with striving for wins on the scoresheets, Reuter said he aimed to use his position within the Clydesdales to further improve his game and as an opportunity to launch his career into the higher levels of the sport.
"Everyone at the Clydesdales is enthusiastic about the year ahead," he said.
"My goal is to play good consistent football and get a look-in for the Q-Cup (Queensland Cup)."
The Clydesdales will take on Wests in Brisbane this weekend.
