HIGH ACHIEVERS: The winners of the Australia Day High Achievement Awards were all smiles at the Cultural Centre on Australia Day.
DESPITE the threat of grey clouds, Gatton turned out in force to celebrate Australia Day with many different events in the region having good attendances.
A good crowd attended the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre events, with the centrepiece being the presentation of Australia Day awards to formally recognise the work of the region's citizens.
Judging by the audience response, the announcement of Alma 'Monnie' Raymont as the 2012 Lockyer Valley Citizen of the Year was an extremely popular winner of the award.
Monnie has worked in a voluntary capacity in the region for decades, working tirelessly for organisations including the P&C Association, the Lockyer Tennis Association and the Anglican Church Guild where she served for 56 years.
Monnie is also a life member of the Gatton Show Society, of which she was vice-president for 40 years and has given 63 years service to the Glenore Grove QCWA.
LVRC mayor Steve Jones said the awards celebrate the accomplishments and contribution of the region's leading citizens who both challenged and inspired people to make their own contribution to the community.
"The winners in each category have demonstrated a significant commitment to their local communities through leadership, initiative and community contribution," he said.
Cr Jones went on to congratulate the nominees in all categories for their outstanding community contribution.
The singing of Happy Birthday to Australia at the end of the awards ceremony topped off what was a very moving Australia Day.
