FOOTBALL season is on the horizon and to whet your appetite, you can play the Aussie rules alternative (touch) version of the game.

This is a shorter and safer version of footy that promotes social participation, fitness and fun with your friends while incorporating all that you love about the traditional game.

AFL 9s is easier to play, less physically demanding and provides an environment where participation, enjoyment and safety are the priorities.

AFL 9s competitions are played across Queensland and now the Lockyer Valley will be launching its own competition in 2012.

The Gatton based competition will be an eight week AFL 9s competition beginning on Monday, February 13, running to the end of March.

Before the competition starts there will be a free Come and Try day held on Monday, February 6.

Where: touch fields, UQ Gatton Campus

When: Monday evenings

Times: games start at 6pm

Cost: about $50 per player ($600 per team)

Age/gender requirements: mixed male/female competition, minimum 14 years old to adult

Game details: nine a side mixed (minimum three of each gender)

Time: two 20 minute halves
