SPECIAL CENTURY: St Stephen's Anglican Church in Ma Ma Creek will celebrate a milestone 100 year anniversary this weekend.
MA MA Creek's St Stephen's Church will reach a special milestone this weekend as it celebrates its 100th anniversary.
On Sunday, Archbishop Phillip Aspinall will join the Anglican community at Ma Ma Creek to celebrate the centenary of the consecration of the 'new' St Stephen's church in January 26, 1912.
A warm welcome is extended to members of the local, and wider, community to join the celebrations at 10am at St Stephen's and later at a bring and share lunch in Ma Ma Creek Hall at 12.30pm.
In 1911, the congregation had grown too large for its 23-year-old wooden church, and a new concrete block church was built on site.
As the congregation continued to worship, both inside and outside, the new church was gradually built around the previous building.
The bricks were built on site - wooden moulds filled with a mixture of crude concrete, then a lid put on and left to dry.
The floor timbers of the old church were later laid in the new church.
The church and its adjoining cemetery are located on the hill beside the school, on land donated by Charles Tryhorn.
The cemetery holds special significance for the local community and is the final resting place of many members of the Tryhorn and other local families.
Any significant photos or history of the church brought for the anniversary on Sunday are welcome and would be appreciated.
There will be a PowerPoint presentation of what has been collected and some of the activities of the past congregations will be revealed in some old newspaper cuttings.
