Green adventure

TWO Laidley State High School students are halfway through the trip of a life time.

Year 10 students Harley Miles and Jared Dennien are currently camped at a stretch of the Brisbane River near Fernvale as part of an educational eco-adventure, Bunya to the Bay.

Jared said his studies throughout the trip are a unique opportunity.

“One thing I didn't know was the bug life in the water actually affects the overall water quality,” he said.

“It has been really interesting too, like the dragonfly larvae are so small and they turn into a dragonfly.

“I just think that is really amazing.”

He said his water quality testing on Wivenhoe Dam was reassuring.

“I found out myself that the quality there is really good. Our water is in safe hands, I suppose,” he said.

It was an educational trip, but Jared said it has been more than that.

“It's not so much the crustacean study that I am doing, it's life in general,” he said.

Jared said the family day at Wivenhoe Dam last Sunday was nice, but he is too busy to get homesick.

Harley said the trip has already taught him a lot.

“I have a better awareness of the environment,” he said.

“Earlier we did the Lowood stretch of the river, where I had actually done a fair bit of canoeing before.

“I thought it was normal, but after this trip I know that it is actually really grotty. Something needs to be done about it.”

Harley said they are also observing a lot of wildlife.

“We have seen koalas, lizards and snakes and a lot of birds and fish.”

The 16 day trip finishes this Sunday at Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre.
