Week urges kids to enjoy reading

STUDENTS OF ALL ages flick through story books at lunch time during book week.

BOOK Week 2010 has been hailed a success at Gatton State School encouraging students to get into reading, instead of watching TV 24/7.

Teacher-librarian, Steve Warren, said students were very well-behaved and were keen to learn more by spending time in the library reading different books.

“This year is called Across the Story Bridge and is the theme all around Australia,” Mr Warren said.

“They are always interested in books on cars, horses, fairies and sport.”

Students voted for picture book of the year, Bear and Chook by the Sea.

Mr Warren said book week promotes reading and the displays promote the amount of work each year level put into it.

He said there were many pirates, fairies and Harry Potters getting into the spirit of the week.

Meanwhile at Forest Hill State School, students were involved in making books into a bridge to encourage their learning.

Alice Lerch, teacher aide in the library, believes book week is important to attract children back to books.

“It highlights the importance of books and reading to kids,” Ms Lerch said.

“The celebration helps kids get involved and appreciate what information they can gain from books.

Ms Lerch said the school also incorporated their annual book fair into the celebration.
