TWO Laidley State High School boys set off on the 340 kilometre educational trip, Bunya to the Bay last Sunday.
Year 10 students, Jared Dennien and Harley Miles began their hiking, biking and canoeing trip at the Barambah Environmental Education Centre, and will travel down the Brisbane River to Moreton Bay.
Jared said he is really happy to be chosen out of so many other students.
“They only take two from each school, so that is pretty cool,” he said.
The boys will be conducting their own environmental studies along the way with Jared monitoring sea life and Harley observing the impact of humans on the Brisbane River.
The boys said they are prepared for the long journey and attended an orientation camp with the other participants, to make sure.
“We got fitted with proper mountain bikes and helmets and everything and did a bit of a refresher course on canoeing,” Jared said.
Harley said mixing with over 30 kids from other schools in Queensland was also enjoyable.
“It was really good meeting a lot of new kids as it was quite multicultural so that was a different experience,” he said.
Jared agreed that the multiculturalism was a beneficial part of the trip.
“Mixing with kids from other cultures is really different, like some of the kids were African and didn't know much English, and I think that is going to be really interesting,” he said.
Jared said he knows the trip will be a once in a lifetime experience.
“I think what I will get from it, is a great experience and a way to learn a lot of new things,” he said.
“We will have a lot of fun and learn a lot from it.”
