Early Christmas for Laidley RSL

MEMBERS of the Laidley RSL Sub-branch, along with partners and guests gathered last weekend to celebrate Christmas in July.

In what was one of the group's largest social events, diners were entertained by the Ipswich RSL Youth Band.

Sub-branch president Mike Nowlan said the July Christmas function was the second such event conducted by the Laidley RSL.

“This time we were honoured to have the Youth Band in attendance providing excellent music while we dined,” Mr Nowlan said.

“A highlight for us was listening to 10-year-old Laidley resident Crystal Hoolihan who plays the flute with the band.

“Crystal began playing the flute when she was only eight. The following year, when she was considered old enough to play at Laidley District State School, her teacher Bill Redpath recognised her talent.”

Crystal said, after six months of lessons at school, Mr Redpath invited her to join the Ipswich RSL Youth Band as he knew she would not receive enough of a challenge within the school system.

“I joined the RSL Youth Band when I was aged nine, and I'm still the youngest band member,” she said.

“I'm now taking private lessons each week and am preparing to sit my first music exam for the flute.

“I hope to be a musician in an orchestra when I'm older; either that or be able to teach others how to play music.”

Mr Nowlan said the Christmas in July concept is now an item on the social calendar.
