Coast cancer faith 'healer' gagged

AUSTRALIA'S consumer watchdog has obtained orders to stop a Sunshine Coast “cancer healer” from promoting his services.

Nambour cancer faith healer Daryl Jones.

A SUNSHINE Coast man who claims his “diet, exercise and faith” based program defeats cancer has been ordered to stop promoting his service for which he charges thousands of dollars.

The Australian Competition Consumer Commission has obtained temporary injunctions against the principal of Darryl Jones Health Resolution Centre at Nambour over alleged misleading cancer treatment claims.

The ACCC alleges that Darryl Jones asserted on the centre’s website, www.darryljoneshealth.com.au, that the reduction or elimination of glucose in the diet and taking vitamin B17 together with a strict exercise regime defeated cancer.

The ACCC alleges Mr Jones represented these methods as preferable to conventional medical treatments such as surgery or chemotherapy without any formal qualifications.

In 2008, Mr Jones charged clients $2900 for three months of his “diet, exercise and faith” based program but this fee has been reportedly reduced since.

Two years ago, he was the founder and operator of Nambour-based CanHelp.

Mr Jones yesterday told the Daily that the ACCC were “out to draw blood”.

“I have thousands of clients who come from across Australia, New Zealand, Japan and England,” he said.

“It’s a big disappointment that the ACCC want to make an example of me and the alternative medicine industry.

“It’s a sad state of affairs that I might go to jail.”

When asked to explain his cancer centre Mr Jones said it was a faith-based organisation with ties to the Assembly of God, which he has been involved in for 20 years.

“I teach that health is a God-given right,” he said.

“I have a chapel on site and there are counsellors and support in addition to the diet and exercise advice.

“When you are created you are created perfectly, you just need to adjust ...”

Mr Jones said the costs for his program were miniscule compared to that of surgery or chemotherapy.

“Fighting the ACCC will cost $100,000... and I am seeking support from the community to help,” he said.

However, an Assembly of God spokesman said they would never condone charging people to pray.

“The church has no knowledge of this man on our database as a minister or a person with credentials,” he said.

A Cancer Council spokeswoman said it only supported the use of cancer treatments and symptom relief that have been scientifically tested and proven to be safe and effective.

The injunctions stop Mr Jones, until the court makes further orders, from making claims that his treatments can prevent or treat the growth of cancer, or any medical condition.

Mr Jones must first obtain written advice from an appropriately-qualified professional certifying that the proposed treatment is, in the opinion of that person, supported by reliable scientific or expert medical opinion and is believed to be effective and safe.

That advice must be disclosed to his clients, customers and the ACCC.

Yesterday his Facebook and MySpace sites promoting his program were still active. Several of Mr Jones’ clients, who support his cancer program, called the Daily to explain it.

“I pay $100 per consultation with Mr Jones,” Joanne Harcombe said. “He helped me overcome breast cancer.”

A directions hearing has been set down for April 16 in the Brisbane Federal Court.

To prey on the vulnerable and mostly terrified patients diagnosed with life threatening illness's and offer them a hope that it all will just go away is a cruel act.We have heard of spontaneous recovery in patients but somehow I do believe it is the person's own body and willpower that can bring that about in some cases.I have no doubt whatsoever that for some people a strong belief in their religion does bring them comfort and a sense of peace. Personally I would go for the conventional way of treatment and wherever and whenever it was possible live my life to the fullest.

If he can prove his methods work then fine, table the proof and shut the action by the ACCC down. Proof is more than 'it worked for me', it needs to stand up to independent scrutiny and be verifiable.

If he can't prove it then he should be ashamed of himself and stop preying on needy, vulnerable people.

There are disgusting lowlifes out there that prey on sick people in their time of need, that is what the ACCC is trying to rule out in such cases.

yeah, a bit like provign a Mary McKillop Miracle -- "I believe, so it must be" ... a bit like making fish of one and fowl of the other ---

I too am a cancer patient, and I too have received very similar advice from qualified medical experts,, Eat Well, reduce weight *( glucose.sugar) and include vitamin B in your diet." Sounds very familiar - Only diffrence is, One is qualified, the other isn't..

Not sure he should be pulling 199 bucks a session for preaching the blooming obvious, though

Thousands of clients! Even if there was just 1000 at around $2500 each - that's $2.5 million!! Pretty good money for just giving advice and prayer. And then he had the nerve to ask for donations to raise $100,000 to fight the ACCC. Wish I'd thought of that one.

Doctors prey on the vulnerable everyday. Most get apid very good salaries everyday. The ACCC doesn't dare look at them. Medicare does however conduct audits on their services and the results are atrocious.

righto. thousands of clients round the world, each paying (at least) $100 a session. that's several hundred thousand dollars in income each year, yet mr jones is asking for community help (read community dollars) to fight the accc?

The difference is, newsblog, is that your fully qualified, excellent oncologist will also be recommending other treatments.

This (guy) is in favour of asking an imaginary friend in the sky for intervention.

Lock him up.

Recognise that:
a) You can't argue against faith. Faith by itself can result in some pretty amazing things. But it is also horses for courses so to speak - does not seem to work by a simple click of the fingers or the laying on of hands. In other words, There is no guarantee. But it has been known/proven to work.

b) License Witch Doctors set up "practices" all over Australia and there is also no guarantee that what they do will work. And somewhere along the line in cahoots with big Pharma zillions of dollars parts hands. Hey, right now we have been told to expect the 2nd more deadly wave of Swine Flu. Our Witch Doctors and Government obviously know a whole heap more than the Northern Hemisphere Witch Doctors because there was no 2nd Wave in the N.Hemisphere winter! The UK even shut down its Swine Flu hotline and formal enquiries are being initiated to determine why everyone had such an alarmist reaction and where the MONEY went.

c) There are many 'alternative" health providers and there is always some measure of diet alteration and taking of supplements to help bind the 'faith' process. Often faith needs a crutch to work off. And absolutely, often it just does not work.

d) What position then should the ACCC take with places like: Lourdes, Fatima, San Giovanni Rotondo, Medjugorje..

I have never heard of this person .. I'd be more interested in finding out how many people have been helped/cured. I'd be interested in finding out how many unhappy people there are out there - are there many complaints? Let's audit some testimonials?

I am of the belief that any patient of this man has reached the point where medical treatment has done all it can to treat a cancer sufferer. This is a persons last chance so to speak and if a change in diet and exercise helps those suffering live a quality life a little longer then isn't that a good thing?

It is a well known fact that cancer feeds off sugar and that by changing ones diet the increase in survival can possibly be extended. Miracles can happen!

My only gripe with this organisation is the fact that they are so called 'christains' and in my opinion should not be charging for these 'miracles'

Well lets face it, Doctors train do do one thing issue drugs for the pharmaceutical companies.
Nsw Government considered dropping support for radiology and chemotherapy because of the dreadfully low results achieved ..less than 5% success after 5 year treatment plans ......
you ask yourself what do with all the donations for cancer research ,
What have they achieved in over 100 years...Nothing but a very well funded industry ...
please just one drug that cured anything ....

The people who have invested their lives and money in an individual's assessment of their condition without any medical qualifications has either been grasping at straws or easilly led up the path by a very persuasive man. I believe the second is reason is why the ACCC should investigate him. Has he cured himself from cancer in this way? No!

No medical history... in Natropathics or alternative treatments & he isn't a priest/religious leader and he certainly didn't study medicine. This man has actually been running down oncologists by telling his "followers" that the medical expert advice is not a answer & the chemo/radiation is just killing off the good cells & poisoning your system more...INSTEAD of maybe looking after your body with healthy eating & exercise in combination?

What about the families who believed in him and now only have a short period of time to live ...will they look back and say "what if?"...

All this from a plasterer turned Gym-owner turned healer?

Ha Ha Debbiemaggie - you got it wrong,. My excellent oncologist TOLD me what treatment I am to have, The alternatives were never discussed. I was TOLD .... it just happens that the treatment he has directed is also the treatment option I preferred -- though I did try to ask about the several different options ... but he just dismissed my inquiries .. -- On the issue of FAITH ? Yeah I have every faith in the medicos - cos they know more about what they're doing than I do - so who am I to put up an argument against their methodology?
Oh that treatment commences on 22nd March just 8 months after the diagnosis!!!!!

rjcorssley good luck with it mate - I am on the Hormone treatment - and No one even asked if I've ever had heart problems ( nor did they check my health records which will clearly show that I was treated for a heart "event" in the nambour hospital! Today I learn from you that my heart condition might have jeopardised my health?? and this from a qualified medico!.

On the hormone treatment my psa dropped from 7.6 to 0.36
I know one guy who's psa reading is - wait for it, 1774.3!!! He looks extremely healthy, but I understand he's been told there's nothing they can do for him.

So all you young bucks out there who are invincible go get tested, regardless of what the ABC may have recently told you -- I alsoknow a guy 54 - and his two nephews aged 27 who have been diagnosed, so its no longer an "old" mans problem

interesttingly we can't have faith in faith healers,-- did that put Mary Mckillop on the outer with the accc?

Hmm... i notice the other places of faith mentioned in the above comemnts (Lourdes, Fatima, San Giovanni Rotondo, Medjugorje..) all belong to a faith that thrives on a still-to-be-proven theory - and takes huge money from the followers ... all in the name of "faith" .... yet THEY get away with it! Funny, that!

It is the peoples right to choose what form of cancer treatment they want. Most people who have a life threatening disease are well informed on their options. I come from a long line of cancer in my family, they have all opted not to go the medical/ chemo/ radiation way and all have survived their cancers. Including myself!

I have had known others who put their hands in the hospitals and have died. U don't have to be a qualified person to guide another to well being, just someone who cares enough and has experience and knowledge. People today put too much importance on credentials

Hmmm let's do the maths ... $2,900 for 3 months is $31.18 a day. A lot less than paying for radiation treatment, chemotherapy and surgery.
The Cancer Council of NSW supports diet and exercise, so what's so strange about someone administering diet and exercise?
The Medical System is a Trillion-dollar a year industry .. and research shows that chemotherapy has a 97% fatality rate.
Hmmm...I don't see anyone challenging the big bucks for the big system here.
Actually, I don't recall Darryl Jones touting himself as a "Faith Healer" either ...

I had a personal family experience with Darryl Jones who helped my father with his health and fitness at the age of 79 in 2003. My father was in such good health thanks to Darryl, he guided Dad with his sensible eating approach, taking apricot kernel oil (B17) and weight training. He had a real spring in his step, colour in his face and an incredibly happy outlook. His blood pressure was the lowest in 35yrs and a terrible ulcer on his leg which was under doctors supervision for 6 months was gone in a month.
We should praise people like Darryl Jones.
I think Darryl's success stories will be proof in the pudding. I know our experience is.

Mikeymikes - Im going through the public health system - so far it has cost me not a cent!

- but I was certainly not given any "options" I was pretty much 'told' what will be happening to me - I didnt argue because frankly I think I'm getting the right treatment.

Re doctors not being allowed to talk about alternatives - My urologist is Indian - and he deals mostly with contemporary medicine. His mother is also a doctor, who deals in both contemporary and indian "traditional" medicines -- My urologist certainly did discuss alternatives - and believes there's room for both options

Hi,
First of all I met Darryl Some years ago as a skinny, pale, frail guy in my early 20's, i had pimples all over my back and wanted to generally gain muscle mass and improve overall health, within 2 months of utilising Darryl's strict food and exercise guidelines i no longer had pimples on my back, i had put on lean muscle, dropped body fat, and my blood pressure and blood sugar levels had normalised, I also no longer craved sugar like i had in the past. Darryl's knowledge and understanding of the body was incredible!. Seeing so many testimonies of people that had also benefited from Darryl's principles was a pleasure to see. Around 6 years later and still following Darryl's principles, (currently studying to work within the health industry) my health has been exceptional, it's only when i go away or eat rubbish that i notice a huge difference, It amazes me the amount of crooks out there getting away with so much, and here we have someone making a difference using what the earth provided (real food) to help others, at worst i think Darryl should be suspended from practising his methods until he's fully qualified. I aspire to be able to help people like Darryl has helped others.

On the issue of faith. In the New King James version bible, you can take a excerts from a diet that was given to the Jews in the old testament and i have read stories of "miracles" happening in todays society, ie, Crohn disease being "cured" and other ailments disappearing. Look up Jordan Rubin who has an amazing story.

I ran an Allergy free shop ( just like Mrs Flannery's) down south for a few years and learnt one thing," we are what we eat", but here's the thing; we do not know how many chemicals and nasties are being placed in our food. Look at "fedupwithfoodadditives" on the web and see the results Sue Shepherd is having with Victorian school kids by reducing crap in their diets.

So while this guy seems like a shonk, he seems to have put all the right things in order and come up with a (from bloggers) solution. If i had cancer, i would be getting opinions from where ever i could and making an informed decision.

He has just been taking the hard earned money from innocent people, people who are desperate to stay alive. there is no support from this man whatsoever, my friend was with him for sometime, he left and had the operation last year, Jones never rang him to see why he hasn't come back. he had to ask for support while he was with Jones and never received it. He was told that the tumor would show up on the scan bigger but that would be fluid and one day it would get so big that the tumor would burst and come out of his body.
Please, if your a supporter think about what your doing, think about your loved ones and how will they feel if you die earlier than you should.

I can't believe the lack of support for this man. Can't you see every time some one have success with cancer the government/ACCC will shut them down.

Wow can you imagine the BILLIONS! of research dollars they would lose if someone actually had the answer. They don't want to stop him be cause he's wrong. They want to stop him because he's right.

From what I can tell from people that have met this man and know first hand, 1 left treatment early and went back to the hospital system. 2 have had great success. Lets get more testimonies first then pass judgment.

On the charges side of things. I'm sure like any business he has over heads, People to train, wages. I doubt with the "quick to judge" attitudes above he has them lining up out side his office. We could be in the midst of something real here I'm excited!

I have had dealings with Daryl Jones and found him to be a very genuine person who only wants to help people. His knowledge of health and metabolic disorders can only enhance your chance of survival. There is nothing to stop you from receiving mainstream medical advice as well. Most of the people I met had been told by Doctors that nothing more could be done for them. Many of these people are thriving. Religion was never mentioned and he is not a wealthy man. Chemo can cost around $3000 a dose, which we all pay for,and the success rates are abysmal. Metabolic disorders will only find a true cure
when treated on a metabolic level, unfortunately you won't find mainstream test anything they can't patent.

We to have had contact with darrly and found him to be a genuine person who wants to help people who have little hope left.He NEVER told us that he could cure cancer.....he said he could help to make my husbands immune system stronger to help fight his TERMINAL cancer for longer. The doctors said NO CURE NO TREATMENT...go home and sort out the rest of your very short life. Therefore you are forced to look for alternitives or lay down now and die.Darryl gave us a place to start...he offered encouragement and a positive attitude to live longer...he never preached any form of religion to us.

Like so many others, my father was told to go home and wait to die. After searching many alternative therapies he chose Darryl's methods above others. Yes he saw Darryl. Yes he paid money for the service. Yes he died 18 months after diagnosis. BUT his life well exceeded doctor's expectations and his quality of life was excellent.

Doctors were amazed how fit and healthy he was and that somehow the cancer stopped growing and spreading. He had time to enjoy with his family and saw the birth of his grand daughter. We will be ever-grateful to Darryl and his team and just wish we had found him sooner.

My point is that my father had a CHOICE. He sought treatment he believed in and was successful. If you don't believe, if you don't agree, if you think it's too expensive... don't do it! Ultimately YOU are your owner and decision maker. But PLEASE don't shut down this provider and take the choice away from others.

Faith is something spoken of that many here have suggested is belief without evidence and in times past that may have been true and for the ignorant it still remains true . However Bible faith can become intelligent and rational for example the washing of hands and destroying fungus and mildew from the home as spoken of in Leviticus, not to have the blood and fat of animals- a little Bible hint to avoid serious diseases such as cancer. To many that would not even enter their thoughts as having any significance.

What is the body made of and heals the body? Minerals and the God given plants- all disease are nutritionally based- a fool would have to suggest otherwise or a drug rep or its representatives.

What is the effect of the drug? To change form and location not otherwise for it never rebuilds the body and so we see people cleared of cancer - given no diet and exercise suggestions and coming down with secondaries- clearly a natural result of poor rational or intellectualisms of allapathy and a lot of money in somebody's pocket
