Weather won’t stop them

THE lads from Bottom Dwellers fishing club hit Lake Awoonga in force last week as did several other local fishos.

THE lads from Bottom Dwellers fishing club hit Lake Awoonga in force last week as did several other local fishos.

The Gatton crews had a team event for the week open to club members and non members and here Nicky John Harch’s Team Barraletic came out on top for the second year in a row with Blake Topp’s Team Black Dogs second.

In total seven club boats made the six hour journey and competed for the week.

The club’s week long individual competition was won by Andrew Schmidt with four Barra at a combined total of 3.92m.

Second went to Nicky John Harch with three Barra and a combined total 3.16m.

Other standout fish were taken by Dave Stasinowsky with a 101cm fish, Raymond Schultz with a 106cm Nicky John Harch with one at 114cm and the fish of the week was Blake Topp’s donkey at 123cm.

Apart from the rain mozzies and sand flies, all had a ripper of a time and can’t wait for next year’s trip.

Around the grounds

This weekend’s fishing was again uncomfortable due to rain, wind and what ever Mother Nature can send us so again there are very few reports.

Brisbane River is still been producing School Jew and Squire in the usual spots of the deep holes and sunken structures but the influx of fresh is taking its toll. Crabs have slowed dramatically everywhere.

At Jumpinpin, Sand Whiting and Bream are a popular catch around the banks of the “Pin” area but the size is lacking.

At the Broadwater all the usual spots have been producing small catches but the fish aren’t big.

The low barometric pressure appears to be going hand in hand with the huge influx of fresh to make the fishing very tough.

A stand out on Sunday was School Jew being taken in the middle of the day in the Seaway in reasonably good numbers.

Golden Trevally and Big Eye Trevally are hitting the bait schools around the Sand Pumping Jetty at the Southport Spit and some good catches have been taken from the jetty.

Mackerel are expected be running well when the weather clears as they have done in the past so come on Blue Skies.

I spoke to numerous fishos at the Grand Hotel boat ramp on Sunday and no crabs have been taken at all and very few fish.
