Sad death of Lowood character

MARGARET Catherine Wieland (nee Glasheen) was born in the Toowoomba Hospital on June 11, 1953 and passed away at her home on February 21, 2010.

Margaret was the eldest daughter of Esme and Lofty Glasheen.

She had two sisters, Anne and Sue, and a brother Steve.

Margaret was raised in Clifton and was very well known in the area.

On June 10, 1972 Margaret married Alan Wieland and was blessed with two children, Cheryl in 1972 and Rodney in 1973.

Margaret and Alan and their children lived their lives in Lowood.

When the children were growing up, Margaret was very well involved in different events around the town with both herself and Alan becoming involved in the two hotel social clubs in Lowood.

Margaret spent many hours at the local primary school helping Mrs Keller as her helper in a teacher aide capacity and stayed there for many years when her children started school.

She gained many friends around the town and was very popular.

Margaret joined the local Lowood Ladies Bowls Club in 1984.

Elected Assistant Secretary in 1987 and Secretary in 1990/91, she continued to hold the Secretary position for 20 years before passing away suddenly.

She received the honour of Life Membership in 2001 and has been a regular player in Rosebowl events, Pennants and the Mayor’s Cup.

Margaret also played when Lowood teams visited other clubs and not only fulfilled her duties as Secretary, but also assisted with the preparation of morning teas on bowling days.

On special event days at the Club, her expertise in preparing lunch was the roasting of potatoes.

She loved selling raffle tickets on party days and was not only a bowling mate, but also a dear friend to everyone and will be sorely missed.

Margaret joined the Lowood Show Society in 1990 and became Secretary in 1992 after the passing of her dear friend Isabel Lubke, she remained the longest serving Secretary (19 years) and received Life Membership at the Centenary Show in 2007.

As a writer, Margaret helped many show societies at their annual shows in the horse arena.

Margaret was also the Secretary of the Lowood Show Society Ladies Sub-Committee and was a valued member who was always there to assist in any catering that needed to be done.

Her last catering duty was for a wedding on February 20.

She will be sadly missed around the community through the clubs and associations and many friendships she made through her short life.
