AS part of the popular Living Library Series, two different tales involving fabric and a love of sewing will be shared at a special Ipswich 150 event being hosted by the Ipswich Library and Information Service next week.

Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said the Family Threads event would be held from 9.30am on March 12 in the Barry Jones Auditorium on the ground floor of the Ipswich Global Information Centre on the corner of South and East streets, Ipswich.

Cr Pahlke said the guest speakers would be Bundamba resident Erin Cook and Tivoli resident Joy Truasheim.

“Mrs Cook has only been an avid sewer for the past two years after she began researching how to make a bustle sparked by interest in her great grandmother’s wedding dress from 1885,” he said.

“She then began recreating garments from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.”

Mrs Cook is not creating costumes and does not wear her creations, instead she is interested in the process which goes into making them.

Last year, she created a collection of garments for Ipswich Girls Grammar School students which were used as part of Australian Library Week 2009.

Cr Pahlke said Mrs Truasheim had sewn since she was a child learning the craft from her mother and a myriad of teachers.

“Through Family Threads Mrs Truasheim will be sharing her journey as a sewer and who influenced her to sew.

“She entered the textile art world 24 years ago and today she is also a quilt teacher and valuer.”

Mrs Truasheim is also one of the founders of Vision Patchworkers Ipswich.

Bookings for the Family Threads event are essential and can be made on 3810 6768.
