IN one month from today the Mt Sylvia State School will celebrate 125 years of providing education to the students of the Mt Sylvia area.

The school which is located 22 kilometres south of Gatton first opened its doors to students on April 10, 1885.

More than a century later the school is still providing education to its students, with 36 students and two full-time teachers on board in 2010.

The 125th birthday celebrations will start at 10am with an official opening at noon. Current school students will be presenting several items from 11.30 onwards.

To make the day even more special a commemorative book has been compiled of past students’ and teachers’ recollections of their time at the school. The cost of the book is $20 and pre-orders are being taken from Dale on 5462 6118.

Also on the day, the school will be selling other souvenirs and providing face painting and a bottle stall for children.

Old vehicles will also be on display and food and drinks will be available for sale.

The school buildings will be open for viewing and several old items of interest will be on display, such as the original admission register and old school books and uniforms.
