Son defeats mum for title

COOMINYA couple Rod and Robyn Sampson taught their son Dane everything he needs to know about small bore rifle shooting.

Now he shows them how it’s done, making a family affair of the Queensland Cup championship in Brisbane at the weekend.

It was a case of no hard feelings as Dane snared his second championship from his mother while dad had to settle for sixth place.

Dane was a convincing winner of the 120 shot .22 calibre prone event held over two days at the Belmont Shooting Complex. He posted an aggregate score of 1170 to mum’s 1166 with Toowoomba shooter John Patzwald third on 1163.

Dane, who shoots with the Commercial Club in Brisbane, won a bronze medal at the Oceania Championships in Sydney in December.

He will be part of a strong Queensland squad chasing their third Australian prone team title in a row at the national smallbore championship in Sydney over the Easter weekend.

Dane completed a successful weekend, winning the 10 metre air rifle championship with an aggregate score of 1113 from Paramount club member Tamsyn Henry on 1097.

Competitors travelled from as far as Charleville to attend the championship shot on electronic targets at the Jim Smith Range.

The crowd was able to follow the shooting action with scores relayed in real time on a big screen for the first time.
