Storm hits Lockyer Valley

THE Lockyer and Somerset region was battered by a severe thunderstorm which swept in from the west after 1.30pm today.

The storm left many trees uprooted and storm water drains struggling to contain the large quantity of water as heavy rain pelted the Valley.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning at 1.20pm for areas including the Lockyer Valley, parts of Ipswich, Somerset and the South Burnett.

The thunderstorms are moving east to northeast and are expected to contain damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) is advising residents to monitor radio and Bureau of Meteorology warnings, secure loose outside items, bring pets indoors and remain inside during the event.

EMQ has warned Queenslanders not to attempt to cross or play in flooded creeks or crossings. For information on how to prepare and what to do during a storm visit www.disaster.qld.gov.au

For storm and flood related assistance contact the State Emergency Service on 132 500 or in an emergency call triple zero (000).
