MARIO fans rejoice: there's a new Wii in town.

Six years after Nintendo released the original motion-sensing Wii, which has sold nearly 100 million consoles, the Japanese company is hoping the high definition Wii U will again take the world by storm.

EB Games Riverlink was one of dozens of stores across the country to hold a midnight Thursday launch for the console with Ipswich Nintendo fans lining up to pick up their new machines. Alongside motion controls introduced by the Wii, the Wii U has introduced a touch screen to the controller.

The second screen means the new console's games are able to display extra controls or maps or even let players keep playing if the TV is being otherwise used.

Harvey Norman Ipswich salesman Chris Malone said the new machine was a huge step up from the original Wii.

"I quite like having a second screen in the controller," he said.

"I'm a big Nintendo fan, and I love Mario, so having it in such great graphics in a new Mario game is awesome.

"It's definitely an upgrade from the original Nintendo Wii."

Mr Malone said he expected the machine to be a popular pick up before Christmas.

"It looks like it has some great games; it already has a new Mario game which is hard to go past."

The Wii U comes in two packages, the white basic pack or the black premium pack.

The premium Wii U comes with packed-in game NintendoLand and a 32 gigabyte hard drive compared to the 8GB in the basic.

Nintendo's major competitors, Microsoft and Sony, are expected to release the next generation Xbox and Playstation next year.

  • The Wii U is the first high-definition console released by Nintendo.
  • Alongside New Super Mario Bros U the Wii U launched with a range of games including Assassin's Creed III, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and exclusive zombie shooter ZombiU.
